How To Buy A Low-Flow or Water-Saving (2.5-gpm)
Showerhead... That Works!

First, since all water-saver shower heads or low-flow shower heads (2.5-gpm) do not function the same, the first question is, "Does it have a "restrictor" that can be removed and thrown away by users? If so, there is no performance guaranty that there will be any savings at all. Find a showerhead that, (1) provides a substantialo savings, (2) provides high pressure showers, and (3) does not have a restrictor.

Second, be willing to try several types until you find one that provides not only a substantial savings on usage, but will also provide quality showers and that normally means "high pressure." If the shower has a "waterfall" effect, it will take longer to rinse thoroughly long hair and not provide the high pressure that most people desire, the primary reason for 30% to 60% complaints.

Third, test your current shower water volume in gallons per minute (gpm). Until you have determined the current water usage in gallons per minute (gpm), you will not be able to know the percentage of the potential savings of any replacement showerhead. Print and use the 2-Minute Shower Water Volume Test. "If it saves more or lasts longer, it is worth more!" Note: Chrome-plated plastic and chrome-plated brass are not the same.

Fourth, Caution! If you normally buy based on the "lowest price," when it comes to items that save, lasts longer or help to reduce polution, "Cheapest is rarely the most economical!" The use of Life-Cycle Analysis (LCA) is strongly recommended for this type of purchase. And for all US Government agencies, Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) is buying method of choice.

Fifth, look for "Special or Patented Features" that are signs of low-flow shower heads that work: (a) Water & Energy Efficient; (b) Auto flow and pressure controls at all pressures between 15-psi and 120-psi; (c) Self-cleaning or corrosive resistant; (d) Warranteed 10 years; and (e) Satisfaction guaranteed or money-back.
